Malawi Street Children NGO, Chisomo, has commissioned a K70Million work of constructing the Street Kid’s Clinic. The exercise is aimed at ensuring that streets have access to good healthcare. Scabies, round worms and Sexual Transmitted Diseases have hit kids plying their trade in the street of Lilongwe confirming reports of sexual activities taking place among the kids.
Apart from sexual transmitted diseases tormenting the kids, round worms and Scabies have heavily hit them because of the poor environment in which they are found. Chisomo Children Club Executive Director, Richard Mdyetseni confirmed the development over the weekend when laying a foundation stone for the construction of K70Million clinic.
Mdyetseni said the clinic will help to treat the street connected children in the Capital Lilongwe. Mdyetseni said Malawi most kids when taken from the streets for rehabilitation they are mostly seen with the problems of STI hence the need to have the clinic. Mdyetseni said the clinic will be constructed at the center and plans are under way to have the similar clinic in Ndilande Blantyre.
Mdyetseni said it is sad that the street kids are being discriminated in conventional Hospitals. Mdyetseni has since urged donors to come forward and partner with them with financial support. “We cannot do this work on our own we are asking our colleagues to come and help us so that we jointly help our kids,” said Mdyetseni. Lilongwe is the home to 3,000 street kids while Blantyre is a home to 2,500 kids. “We are also asking the media to fully help publicizing this event,” said Mdyetseni.
Chisomo Children Club is a child rights local NGO established in 1998 to promote rights and offer a better future for street connected and other vulnerable children in Malawi. Mdyetseni said the clinic is the only solution to guarantee the kids with their right to good health.
