APM Cautioned To Be Vigilant Against GBV

By ERIC NANTCHENGWA

The Chairperson of women’s caucus in parliament, Jessie Kabwila has cautioned President Peter Mutharika to make a strong statement on how his government will address Gender Based Violence in the country. The remarks come shortly after the caucus and concerned stakeholders petitioned Gender ministry in Lilongwe following the escalating cases of violence against women and girls.

Kabwila demands that men should be pioneers in fighting against gender based violence if the battle is to be won. She further urged the government to ensure that the Gender law that was passed in parliament should be rationalized so that it realizes its potential in the fight against Gender Based Violence.

”There is need for guidelines that will foster the fight against gender based violence without that likely we are fighting a losing battle. Let me also point out here that organizations combating GBV are not adequately funded, crippling the efforts in the process” she said. Receiving a nine point petition, Deputy Minister of Gender Clement Nkumba wowed that his ministry will look at the petition and make strides in curbing the malpractice.
