Malawi President Peter Mutharika opens 2017- 2018 Budget session

Malawian President, Professor Peter Mutharika on Friday opened 2017-2018 Budget Meeting of Parliament which which will run from 5th to 30 June 2017.

This is the 6th Meeting in the 46th Session of Parliament.

Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers  Members of Parliament, Ambassadors, High Commissioners, and Senior Government officials attended the meeting.

Speaking during the ceremony, Mutharika expressed hope that the Malawi economy will be picking up especially due to the fact that Malawi had good rains.

Mutharika also sent some warning shots to dishonest civil servants who engage themselves in corrupt practices.

Meanwhile the Malawi economy is expected to pick up following the news that World Bank Board of Executive Directors has approved an $80 million credit to the Malawi Government for general budget support.

This is the first budget support financing approved by the World Bank for Malawi in four years.

According to a statement from Washington, the budget support operation, fully referred to as the Agricultural Support and Fiscal Management Development Policy Operation (DPO), is the first of a proposed series of two operations.

Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development  Goodall Gondwe has commended World Bank for the development.

“We are grateful to the World Bank’s vote of confidence in these efforts, demonstrated by the approval of budget support, but we also recognize that there is a still a long way to go.” Said Gondwe.
