A 22 Year old Woman in Machinga has been sentenced to 30 months imprisonment with hard labour for grievous bodily harm contrary to section 235 of the penal code.

The mother has been identified as Beatrice Ojesi who hails from Mpita Village, Traditional Authority Chamba in Machinga district.
Machinga Police Spokesperson Constable Davie Sulumba told this publication that the Suspect was arrested for burning her 6 year old son with fire for disobeying her.
“In November 2015, the Suspect burnt her son with fire on his arm and two lower legs. She did this saying he was very disobedient and used to come back home late and sometimes sleeping out,” said Sulumba.
After Presenting the facts in Court, Police Prosecutor, Sub Inspector Clif Kalawa, asked the Court to give the convict a stiff punishment since the offence committed was serious in nature.
Kalawa added on that the mother deserved a prison sentence which attracts a life imprisonment because she is the one to protect right of the child.
In Mitigation, Beatrice asked the Court to be lenient and give her a community service sentence instead citing she has a 5 months old c`hild who needs much of her attention.
Passing the sentence, Second Grade Magistrate Maxwell Bowazi said Children are special group of people that need good protection from their parents. He further said that what Beatrice did was not a proper punishment for her Child, and since the offence is serious one therefore he sentenced her to 30 Months IHL to deter other offenders.
So sad indeed.
