Chilumba Barracks were told to withdraw from the league by sponsors Malawi Defence Force (MDF) due to financial hurdles.

The team, which played in the league in 2014, had earlier on requested Sulom to replace Chilumba as they finished as runners-up in the Simama League last year.

According to a document made available to The Malawi Star, Sulom secretariat wrote a letter to Karonga United informing them of their participation in the 2016 season.

“We acknowledge receipt of your letter on the replacement of Chilumba Barracks FC. This is to accept your proposal and request your office to furnish Super League of Malawi with the contact details for Karonga
United FC.

We further wish to request a copy of the log standing as of the end of the 2015 Simama League and a list of players. Karonga United is requested to provide their two preferred match venues for our inspection.

Considering that we are implementing club licensing we wish to request for urgency in the matter,” reads the document.

Sulom’s decision to accept Karonga’s request will see the 2016 season being participated by16 teams. Karonga United and Wizards FC are likely to start playing their first matches next month as they are yet to finalize Club Licensing process.

Wizards were given an automatic place in the top flight following Dedza Young Soccer’s decision to pull out from the promotion playoffs aimed at identifying the 16th team in the league.
