Confirming the development to this publication, Nkhotakota Police Publicist Williams Kaponda said the suspect’s name has been withheld for other reasons but she was nabbed on 13 April 2016 at Nkhotakota main market at around 4pm on Friday.

Kaponda said the mother to the stolen child, Sakina Chiwanda (28) was in a tailoring shop waiting for her blouse to be mended and she met the suspect waiting for her turn for assistance in the same shop.

“The mother to the child asked the suspect to hold her baby while she tried on her mended blouse to see if it was fitting the way she wanted it. The suspect started playing with the child for some time and later asked for a cloth to carry the baby on her back. After some time, the suspect asked to go and drink water at a nearby borehole which is almost 15m away from the shop and the mother accepted,” explained Kaponda.

The suspect vanished with the baby and left the trusting mother devastated. Williams Kaponda said that the suspect used to work with or as prostitutes in different bars in the area.  She was later arrested when she resurfaced at the local market on Friday afternoon.

According to Kaponda, the suspect hails from Lizinda Village, T/A Malengachanzi in the district and she will appear before court on 19/04/2016 to answer charges leveled against her.
