The Malawi police in Nkhotakota have rounded up 28 people in a sweeping exercise aimed at bringing sanity and tightening security in the district.

According to Nkhotakota police publicist, Williams Kaponda, the 28 were nabbed on the night of 13 – 14 April when police officers conducted the exercise in some areas of the district.
“The operation occurred at Nkhotakota boma, Benga , Kalimanjira and Mkaika trading centre in response to an increased theft cases,” said Kaponda.
The people were found loitering in the streets and other residential areas and could not give good reasons for their scampering about at the odd hours.
He added that amongst them are 6 women and 1 arrested for operating a video show during odd hours.
He said all are expected to appear before the court today on the 15th April.
In a related development, Nkhotakota first grade Magistrate on Wednesday convicted and sentenced Ben Banda (19) to 7 years imprisonment for defiling and impregnating a 14 year old girl.
The suspect hails from Chinthumbwi village, T/A Malengachanzi in the district.
