Prison Escapee Arrested while Stealing

Police in Mangochi have nabbed one of the Prisoners who broke out from Mangochi Prison a couple of weeks ago. The suspect has been identified as a 22-years-old Esau Bonard.

Mangochi Police Station Deputy Public Relations, Sergeant Amina Tepani Daudi, has told The Malawi Star that the suspect was a convict at Mangochi Prison and was serving a 72 months imprisonment with hard labour.

She said Bonard with his friends escaped from the prison and have been giving sleepless nights to the Police as they have been hunting them over the past weeks.

“On 20th March 2016 at about 0200hours at Mangochi Police the suspect together with other six convicts dug a hole on a wall of the bathroom and escaped,” She said.

The Spokesperson further told this publication that the suspect was caught red-handed stealing from a Reverend’s house despite having escapee from the Reformatory Centre.

“On 2nd April 2016, at night, the suspect together with two other culprits broke the window of Reverend Isaac Bingula of Christ Citadel and stole an aitel cell phone, a purse and MK1500.00  in cash. The Owner caught them all red handed,” added Daudi.

She added on that after the Reverend caught him, the suspect tried to escape and in the process, he bite the Owners’ ear and a finger of his son in which they sustained open wounds.

The law enforcers’ publicist further disclosed that the suspect has been charged with two offences.

“The suspect is going to answer charges of escaping from lawful custody and Burglary and theft contrary to section 115 and 162 of the penal code respectively,” explained Daudi.

Esau Bonard hails from Mamu Village, Traditional Authority Chowe in the district.
