Addressing the congregation in the Great Hall at Chancellor College in Malawi’s old capital, Zomba, President Peter Mutharika assured the students of the new library.

“The government is aware of what happened to Mzuzu University library and I will make sure that the institution has a new library,” promised the President.

Mzuni Library was destroyed by fire in December last year when students were preparing for the end of semester examinations and it is reported to have destroyed almost 50,000 books.

Firefighters arrived at the scene late as the fire spread quickly to the book shelves. Students worked tirelessly to save the books and computers that were in the library but it was too late to rescue anything from the inferno.

Preliminary reports suggested that an electrical fault was the main cause of the fire but University officials could neither deny nor confirm the suspicions citing all will be confirmed upon receiving a comprehensive report from the experts.

At the Congregation, The Malawi leader added that his government is also aware of the problems that other University staff and students are going through.

The President commended the Chancellor College for being the only accommodate people with special needs and he urged that something should be done quickly in all colleges and universities in the country to be more inclusive
