According to the statement released today the suspension is due to non compliance with hygienic conditions as stipulated in Malawi Bureau of Standards number 21, which is the bureau code of conduct.

MBS posted on their facebook page which reads “The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) wishes to inform the general public that it has suspended operations of Bakers Pride (New) Bakery (bread and Bun) located in Area 3, behind Lilongwe Post Office due to non compliance to hygienic conditions as stipulated in Malawi Standard Number 21; (Food and Food Processing Units – Code of Hygienic Conditions). The suspension is effective 15th March, 2016,”

The suspension comes barely weeks after the bureau suspended the production and distribution of chibuku Shake Shake beer for Lilongwe plant on similar grounds but later the ban was lifted.

Last week, the MBS also suspended the operations of Superior Halaal meats butchery, Superior market, Catering services and Superior food bakery (bread and bans) due to similar reasons.

MBS as a national standards body, according to its director general Davlin Chokazinga, operates product and services and certification schemes to ensure that goods or services comply with quality requirements.

Chokazinga then appealed to consumers in the country to take their role and responsibility seriously when it comes to quality and safety of the products that they buy.
