Mangochi Police Deputy Public Relations officer, Sergeant Amina Daudi has confirmed the incident saying the incident took place in a maize garden at Chaponda village in the area of Traditional Authority Namavi in the district.
“The fact of the matter is that the suspect and his wife were on separation. The husband left his wife at Chiponda Village and went to Makacha village together with his 18 year old son,” said Daudi.
The law enforcers’ publicist further said that on 12th March, the suspect told his son that he was going to kill his wife for what she had done without shading more light. She then said the suspect left the house with a knife.
“At noon the same day, the suspect left the house whilst carrying a knife and a stick without disclosing his destination. The son, realizing that his mother could be in danger, phoned his mother of his father’s intentions. The news forced her to seek refuge at the neighbours’ house,” Continued the spokesperson.
Daudi added that on the following day the woman was going to her house to open a chicken pen when she met the husband on the way. He ambushed and dragged her into a nearby maize garden and she was hit on the head with an axe handle before cutting her in the head with a panga knife.
The woman sustained a deep cut to the head. According to police, the woman died on the spot.
Post-mortem results conducted at Namalaka Health Centre showed that she died due to severe loss of blood.
