12 year old boy, Matias Phiri, in Nkhata bay has committed suicide by hanging himself on a tree for reasons that are yet to be known.
Nkhata bay Police public relations officer, Ignatius Esau, has confirmed the development saying Matias was pronounced dead upon arrival at Chisala Health Centre.
He was a standard eight student at Chisala Primary School. According to the Law enforcers’ publicist, the incident happened on 11th March 2016.
The parents of deceased went to a Maize field and he was left alone at their home. He added that Matias’ sister was first to arrive home who saw the boy’s body hanging in the nearby tree.
“The first person to arrive at home was his sister and he found Matias body hanging in a tree, she then called some people who managed to remove him from the noose.” said Phiri.
They took the body and rushed him to Chisala Health Centre where he was pronounced dead upon arrival by medical personnel at the hospital.
According to Phiri, the Police are yet to establish what prompted him to commit suicide. He further said that this is the second time in the district when a young boy has commited suicide.
Meanwhile, the police have asked guardians to sit down with their children resolve any problems whenever possible.
“We are asking parents that if there are problems with their children to resolve them amicably to avoid such incidents,” advised the Spokesperson. Cases of suicides seem to be on the increase in the country. Two weeks ago, a Primary school Teacher in Phalombe district hanged himself.
