Man Arrested on Theft Charges in Mzuzu

The Malawi Police in Mzuzu have nabbed and charged a 35-year-old Aubrey Mbeye after he was caught stealing items worth millions of kwachas from some tourists in the city.

Deputy Police publicist Cicilia Mfune confirmed the development to The Malawi Star.

According to Mfune, Mbeye was caught in possession of a Laptop, HTC smartphone and MK200, 000.00 in cash, barely some minutes after stealing from a car belonging to the said tourists.

“The tourists parked their car registration number MZ 2337 outside Mzuzu shopping centre and had gone into the shop. Soon after, the suspect swiftly broke into the car and took the said items which are valued at about MK 1.5 million,” said Mfune.

Fortunately, the owners (tourists) came quickly and reported the matter to the Police officers who were patrolling in the city who quickly arrested the suspect. All the items were instantly recovered and returned to the owners.

Currently, the suspect is in a cooler waiting to answer theft charges which if convicted, carry a minimum of a five-year custodial sentence.

Meanwhile, Police have issued a warning for people to be very careful when in town citing some of the people who simply loiter around could be thieves.

The suspect hails from Masito vallage, Traditional Authority Mabuka in Mulanje district.
