The Malawi police have launched a man hunt for two prisoners who escaped at Mzuzu prison on Tuesday when they were assigned to work at the prison farm, Malawistar has learnt.
Gathered information indicates that the two agreed to run away from the prison after the noticed that all the prison guards who were guarding them were far away from them.
However separate findings allege that these guards were bribed to set these prisoners escape from the walls of Mzuzu prison.
“They went to work at one of the prison farms and while there, they agreed to run away. Efforts by prison guards to catch them proved futile because by that time they had already gone,” said another inmate who witnessed the drama.
Northern region prison publicist Austine Mwasangwale who confirmed the incident identified the two escapees as Blessings Nsanama and Kondwani Nyirenda from Balaka and Mzimba respectively.
He went on to reveal that two bicycle taxi operators have since been arrested in connection with the incident on assumptions that they aided the two to escape.
“They have been indeed arrested because we suspect them of aiding these prisoners to escape but currently a man hunt on two has already been launched,” he said.
He however declined to confirm whether allegations that some prison guards might have been behind the whole incident after being bribed but then he maintained that investigations are underway on the same issue.
This has happened barely three months after another prisoner escaped in the hands of prison guards who were escorting him at Mzuzu central hospital for his medical attention.
