An unidentified white man believed to be in his 30’s has been found dead in Lake Malawi, MalawiStar has learned.
According to gathered information, the man might have been attacked by thugs before being thrown in the lake.
Other reports suggest the deceased might have drowned to death in the lake after failing to swim because he was drunk.
“We trapped him with the net we use to catch fish. We thought it was a big fish but thereafter we were dumbfounded to realize we have trapped a white man,” said Amos Chirwa, one of the fishermen who met the fate.
He added that after realizing that the situation became mystifying, they reported to village authorities who reported the tragedy to Police.
“After the Police saw that the body was in a very decomposed state, they authorised the urgent burial of his body in our village graveyard,” he added.
Police Publicist for the district, sergeant Ignatius Esau who confirmed the incident to MalawiStar on Sunday said Police were yet to establish the cause of the death.
He maintained that despite villagers suppositions that the man might have died after being attacked by thugs, it was too early for the Police to conclude anything.
“What they assume may not be entirely true because as Police we are still not sure on what might have caused his death,” said Esau.
MalawiStar understands the man had sustained some deep cuts on his stomach, such that intestines were exposed out.
Medics from Usiska health centre in the district declined to comment on why they failed to conduct postmortem on the deceased but our publication can independently establish that there is no equipments for that at the facility.
