Bunda College, a constituency college of Lilongwe University of Agriculture and National Resources, Democratic Progressive Party Young intellectuals have joined the debate on who is legible to lead the party during the upcoming general elections. Speaking during the Sports day which Bunda College DPP wing organized, Chrispin Kaonda said as young intellectuals they have endorsed Professor Peter Mutharika to lead the party and Government in 2019.
Kaonda said there are various reasons why Mutharika should continue in 2019. “In the first place you may be aware that Mutharika has a constitutional mandate to stand again since he has only one term remaining, secondly, Mutharika has shown positive development skills, as you can see different developments in the country, I will give you specific examples look how the president has managed to transform Bunda College, we have beautiful offices now, new classroom blocks are being constructed you can even check in various universities , things are not the same,” said Kaonda.
Bunda endorsement has been echoed by Lilongwe Technical college who also said they are behind Mutharika to lead the party in 2019. The debate of who is legible of leading DPP was ignited by Former First Lady, Madam Callista Mutharika who openly challenged Mutharika to resign from active politics and pave way for his vice, Saulos Chilima.
In his remarks, Presidential advisor on national unity Vuwa Kaunda who was the guest of honor, commended the young intellectuals for the function which they organized. Kaunda who is also former Minister of Sports and youths during Bingu Wa Mutharika administration said the President has been preaching for integrity, patriotism and hard work.
“We came here to at Bunda to encourage our youths to ensure they are able to embrace core values of our party which include, integrity, patriotism and hard work, as you are aware these are our future leaders,” said Kaunda. Recently, Chancellor College DPP wing endorsed Mutharika to lead the party in 2019. Kaunda said these endorsements are significant signs of showing that DPP is still a strong party.
