Lilongwe City Centre Malawi Congress Party aspirant, Alfred Jiya has become the first citizen outside government to donate a two tone Nissan Pickup to people of Lilongwe City Centre Constituency.
Jiya, a Lilongwe based businessman, said the donation is aimed to help alleviate the challenges that pregnant women and other vulnerable groups of people face whenever obtaining access to medical facilities.
Briefing the media soon after the ceremony, Jiya said he decided to donate the vehicle after noting that people in the area are facing a lot of problems.
Jiya said he was born in the area and grew up there. “I know problems of people living in this area and it pains me when I see women dying because there was no vehicle to take her to the nearest clinic.” said Jiya.
Jiya said the word of God has always encouraged human beings to share what little that one has with others. “After noting all those challenges my wife decided to import this car. I have also advised them to ensure that everyone regardless of tribe, religion, party, and even nationality, should have access to the vehicle,” said Jiya.
Accepting the car as a representative of the community, Samuel Mbale commended Jiya for the gesture.
Mbale said women and the vulnerable have been facing challenges in terms of access to transport.
The donation means that women will have no problem getting to a hospital during childbirth.
The Malawi health sector continues facing challenges despite passing new budgets each year.
