Main Opposition Malawi Congress Party has disowned the sprinter candidate Christopher Joseph Manja accusing him of causing divisions and confusions amongst the electorates. Speaking during a rally over a weekend, MCP regional Chairman, Patrick Zebron Chilondola said, MCP has only one candidate and he is Ulemu Msungama who will be standing under the MCP banner during the upcoming by elections. “We want to be open and precise that MCP has only one candidate here, he is Ulemu Msungama. He is the man who solely went to court and challenged DPP Bentley Namasasu. Our position was that others could have waited for the 2019, but they have chosen to defy what the party thought was a way to go,” said Chilondola.
Manja competed during the 2014 general elections but flopped miserably to Namasasu in controversial polls. Regional Director of elections, Richard Chimwendo praised Msungama describing him as a brave man. MCP President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera also commended Msungama for openly challenging DPP. Chakwera commended people of area 23 for coming in their large numbers to patronize the rally. Chakwera said he was happy to see the sea of people at a rally which was announced with short notice.
During the rally Lilongwe City Mayor, Juliana Kaduya joined MCP. Kaduya was not alone as former cabinet Minister during Bingu Wa Mutharika leadership, Augustine Mtendere also joined the party. Finally, former United Democratic Front (UDF) Regional Governor, John Banda also joined the party.
