Injuries hit Bullets camp ahead of Blantyre derby
The much anticipated Blantyre Derby between Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers will be played in just a matter of days at Kamuzu Stadium, but the hosts have been hit hard with injuries to some key players.
Lethal striker Chiukepo Msowoya, midfielder Chikondi Likwemba and defender Sankhani Mkandawire are all out of the derby due to multiple injuries sustained during previous matches.
The team’s Technical Director Billy Tewesa confirmed the development to The Malawi Star saying the trio are likely out of the derby.
He said Msowoya sustained a torn metatarsal during the inaugural Chifundo Shield Cup some weeks ago while Likwemba dislocated his shoulder during Bullet’s 2-1 victory over Red Lions last week and he is likely to be sidelined for the next four-eight weeks.
“We are having some serious injuries ahead of the crucial encounter with our cross-town rivals Mighty Wanderers on Saturday. Chiukepo, Likwemba and Mkandawire are all out of the derby due to the injuries. These are key players but we will try our level best to win the match by using players who are fit and well prepared for the battle,” he said.
However, the people’s team have received a major injury boost by the return of versatile winger MacPhallen Mgwira and overlapping defender Pilirani Zonda to the first team squad.
The duo have been out of action for the past months due to lengthy injuries they sustained this year.
“We have received Mgwira and Zonda from injuries and it’s a massive boost to us. We have been missing their services for the past games and they will give us more options ahead of the showdown on Saturday,” he explained.
On preparations, Tewesa said everything is going very well.
“Our preparations are going on very well and we are very much prepared to face Wanderers and collect all the three points. If we are to defend the title, these are the teams to beat. We are promising our supporters of a victory on Saturday,” he concluded.
