A road accident has claimed the life of a 46-years-old man and Six others have sustained injuries. The accident occurred on Monday night in Machinjiri Township, Blantyre.
The police have identified the deceased as Charles Galeta from Chitsonga village, T/A Kapeni, Blantyre.
According to Blantyre Police Assistant Public Relations Officer, Andrew Mayawo, the accident occurred at area 2 after a truck failed to go up an escarpment due to an airlock.
Mayowo said the vehicle registration number, PE 2584, Toyota Dyna light truck was driven by Konje Suwedi who was coming from Bembeke in Dedza and was on his way to Chikapa Market in Machijiri.-Blantyre
He said, ” The accident occurred on 28th march 2016 around 8:30pm. According to the driver, the vehicle air-locked just as he was about to go up the steep slope at Area 2 and started sliding backwards. Since it was on a slope, the car fell on the other side of the road,” said Mayawo.
He said all the victims were rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital where one person was pronounced dead, five others sustained minor injuries, but one person broke his left leg.
Mayawo further said that the vehicle is being examined to establish the fault or to see if the driver was negligent. The police will decide the form of action to be taken after a thorough analysis of whatever evidence they will establish.
