There was chaos in Karonga on Sunday, when an angry mob descended on a certain Malawi government top official, on suspicions that he deliberately killed a bicycle taxi operator in the district.
Information sourced by The Malawi Star, indicates that the official, had a narrow escape amid the commotion but his car was destroyed.
This publication followed up the story and can establish that the official is in Police custody on safety grounds.
Karonga police publicist, Enoch Livason, who confirmed the development, identified the official as Anderson Kawajere-Executive manager for Karonga Agricultural Development Division (ADD).
“He was over speeding on the M1 road and he knocked the Kabaza operator who died on the spot.
After the mob saw this, it assumed that Kawajere hit him intentionally thus they descended upon him,” said Livason.
The car registration number NU 5753 was heading from Chitipa to Karonga for some official engagements before hitting the cyclist according to Police.
Meanwhile, an investigation has been launched to establish the main root cause of the chaos.
As of Monday, the remains of the deceased were at Karonga hospital waiting for identification.
