The Immigration Department has announced that post offices in the country will soon start issuing passports to Malawians.
According to information obtained by The Malawi Star, the department is just waiting for Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) to finish rehabilitating Mangochi post office and Lilongwe post office respectively.
Immigration Department Public Relations Officer Joseph Chauwa said this development will ease congestion at their offices.
“We have finalized everything regarding this issue and we are just waiting for MACRA to finish rehabilitating Mangochi and Lilongwe post offices respectively.”
“This will definitely ease congestion at our offices. It will also help passport seekers to travel short distances as they will be given the passports by the Post Offices,” he said.
Passport seekers travel long distances in search for the travelling document at the Immigration Department Offices.
For processing an ordinary passport which takes 21 days one has to pay MK48,000 whereas the 5 days express passports are priced at K58,000.
The emergency passport that takes two days to be processed is K85,000.
Good development, but will they contain corruption?
