A woman is alleging to have escaped rape around midnight on Monday at Mzimba ADMARC depot where she went to buy maize.
She said the watchman has the tendency of mistreating women who sleep at the depot waiting to buy maize.Speaking to The Malawi Star on Tuesday, she confessed that a watchman at the depot would have raped her if she was not able to overpower him.
“He beats and attempt to rape us each time we go there at night to wait for maize and if it was not for my ability to overpower him, he would have raped me this day,” said the woman who opted for anonymity.
The Malawi Star followed up the story and established that the watchman Daniel Nyirenda is becoming popular in the area with rape cases.
Another source, James Mphande told our team that Nyirenda has been preying upon the desperation of these women for maize to rape them.
“Always these women have been complaining of his evil knowledge. We reported him to Police but nothing is changing,” said Nyirenda.
On his part, the accused watchman brushed aside such allegations citing since women began to sleep at the depot, he hasn’t done what he is accused of.
He however confirmed chasing these women away from the ADMARC Premises citing his bosses ordered him to be doing so.
“I am just doing what authorities urged me to be doing. The women are just fabricating such stories to grab your attention. I am a married man and my wife already satisfies me,” he said.
When we went to seek views from authorities at the depot, they declined to grant us an interview on unspecified grounds.
