Some youths in the northern part of Malawi have attacked the government for delaying in constructing the Mzuzu Youth centre complex.
Speaking to this publication, some youths said they were worried and surprised to learn that government has been cheating them on the commencement of the project since last year, but until now nothing is on the ground.
They recalled that before government merged their ministry with the ministry of labour and man power development, they were promised the project was to commence in March last year.
“Then the minister of sports and youth, Grace Obama Chiumia, told us they have already identified the place for its construction, but 10 months or so down the line, nothing is being done on that place,” fumed Vinjeru Sikwese, a youth based in Mzuzu city.
Another youth, Adams Soko, lamented on what he branded government lies citing, as young people they become very angry to realize that most promises politicians make turn out to be mere propaganda.
On her part, Emily Njikho also expressed worries at the delay in the commencement of the project stating, “they currently bank their hope on the promise of its construction because they don’t have a conducive youth centre in the city. The one we have is not worthy to brag about because it leaves a lot to be desired. We thought the construction of the new one would become an alternative,”
This publication understands that the government promised that once built, the centre will comprise many things including a library and a sports centre, both of which can keep the youth busy and productive.
It is also on record that in the 2010/2011 fiscal year, MK 30 million was allocated to the construction of the centre but until now, nothing has been done.
Minister of Labor and Youth development, Henry Mussa, who confirmed the project’s delay, maintained that government is currently working with the Chinese government on the way forward.
“We are waiting from our donors, the Chinese who promised to construct the same,” said Mussa.
